 3. 20th Century Trail Project

Attachment: 20th Century Trail Project Poster_September2009.pdf

The Architecture Centre Devon and Cornwall have been successful in a recent Heritage Lottery Fund bid (HLF) for a project based on the unique 20th Century architecture and built environment of Plymouth.  Throughout the two year project, there will be activities and events held around the city.  In addition to a website, there will be a printed family activity which will be made available at various locations in Plymouth and resources for local teachers to use.

 As part of this project we are asking all ages and abilities to get out and about and enter ‘Plymouth: Your 20th Century City’ photography competition.  We would like to see images of 20th century buildings, landscape, and public art in and around the centre of Plymouth.  All the winning images will be used throughout the project.  The deadline for entries is midnight, Tuesday 3rd November

In addition, if you would like to learn new and or develop existing photography skills by photographing 25 locations around Plymouth City Centre please come to our digital photography workshop on Saturday 24th October, where you will also get a preview of the project.  Places are limited.

 A vital part of the success of the project will lie in the hands of community involvement.  We are looking for people to become be involved in our volunteer group.  All ages are welcome, though if under sixteen you will have to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.  You can give as much or as little time as suits you.

Full terms and conditions of the competition plus further details for all of the above can be found at www.acdandc.org.uk.

Plymouth is truly a 20th Century city, it was granted city status in 1928 and currently has the greatest number of post-war buildings listed by English Heritage outside of London.

5. JRF newsletter - September 2009  - Engaging public support for eradicating UK poverty

What are the public's attitudes to poverty, what influences their attitudes, and what would help to build public support for anti-poverty measures?

These issues are explored in Engaging public support for eradicating UK poverty, which rounds up what JRF and others have learned during JRF's Public Interest in Poverty Issues (PIPI) programme.

It finds that:

  •  there is limited public awareness of the extent and reality of UK poverty, and people often think it is the individual's responsibility to get out of poverty because they are unaware of the obstacles to achieving this;

  •        communication has an important role in highlighting solutions to UK poverty, changing attitudes that poverty and inequality are inevitable, and addressing legitimate public fears about anti-poverty measures;

  • people experiencing poverty are under-represented in the media - voluntary sector organisations can help to improve their profile;

  • there is media interest in poverty, but coverage is limited and often stereotypical;

  •   greater public awareness and support and sustained attitude change depend on a long-term collaboration between government, civil society, media and private sector organisations.
